From the desk of NCSY Alumni Director - Rabbi Dave Felsenthal

Just another NCSY Hall of Fame story.  Two winters and several months ago we had 200 students on our NCSY birthright trips. One of those participants was Jake Freedman. We heard the first part of this story in a previous edition where I shared how Jake and I first talked at length after a speaker gave a touchy feely class on love and marriage. Jake was very disturbed by the class as it did not connect with his tough and logical “just the facts” personality. That would be no big deal; but, as Jake questioned the Teacher quite loudly, everyone in the class became very aware of Jake’s take! For the rest of the story

Have an Awesome Shabbat,

D'VAR TORAH BY AN ALUMNUS
Parshas Beha'aloscha By Rabbi Seth Nadel

At the beginning of the parsha, Aharon is charged with the mitzvah of kindling the menorah. The Torah then tells us, “And Aharon did so…” (Bamidbar 8:3). Why does the Torah need to tell us that Aharon performed this mitzvah? Rashi (quoting the Sifrei), explains that this seemingly extra verse is the Torah’s way of praising Aharon for not deviating from, or changing the directive.

Why should we assume that Aharon would stray from the command? And why does the Torah need to praise him for doing just what Hashem asks of him? Continued

NCSY ISSUES A CALL FOR SEXUAL ABSTINENCE AMONG JEWISH TEENS -- negiah.org

Deeply disturbed by an environment in which teenagers, including Jewish teens, are increasingly engaged in sexual experimentation, NCSY, the youth program of the Orthodox Union, today announced negiah.org, an abstinence program to convince teenagers that sexual activity before marriage should be avoided in the interests of their physical, emotional and religious well-being.

OU West Coast Banquet Will Honor Several NCSY Alumni June 19th

At the Banquet, the OU will launch its Ahuva Wernick Sefer Torah Campaign to provide a Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll) for the OU Teen Center, located at West Coast Headquarters, 9831 West Pico Boulevard. The campaign is in the memory of Ahuva Wernick, a"h, who was the founder of West Coast NCSY and "Mom" to NCSYers, as well as a true believer that they were the key to the future.

This year's honorees include:

• Robert and Rosina Korda of Beverlywood will receive the OU Keter Shem Tov Award. They have rendered invaluable service to the OU and many other community organizations, while their three sons have been very active in NCSY;

• Dr. Stephen and Roslyn Rothman of Beverly Hills will receive the OU Synagogue Leadership Award. They are currently active in many local synagogues and organizations; their children followed in their footsteps and were actively involved in NCSY while growing up in Los Angeles.

The OU will also honor six young people from its West Coast communities. Rita Carla Bron of Beverly Hills, Ori Kanefsky of Los Angeles, and Ariela Rosenberg of San Diego spent the past year as Senator Joseph Lieberman Scholars. Los Angeles residents Asher Millman, Ari Platt, and Rachel Schultz are National Directors Fellows.
