D'VAR TORAH BY AN ALUMNUS
"A Light Unto The Nations" By Rabbi Zev Leff

The Israelites [also] did as Moses had said. They requested silver and gold articles and clothing from the Egyptians. God Made the Egyptians respect the people, and they granted their request. [The Israelites] thus drained Egypt of its wealth (Shemos 12:35-36).

Prior to the Exodus, Hashem caused the Jews to find favor in the eyes of the Egyptians. The immediate reason for this was so that the Egyptians would readily offer their vessels of gold and silver to Bnei Yisrael, in fulfillment of Hashem's promise to Avraham that his descendants would leave their servitude with great wealth. But if that were Hashem's only intention, it would have been sufficient to cause the Egyptians to give over their wealth out of fear of Bnei Yisrael.

We must, therefore, seek another explanation for the miracle of the Jews finding favor in the eyes of the Egyptians (see Ramban to Shemos 113)-i.e., some reason why it made a difference whether the Egyptians loved and respected us or merely feared us?

Breaking News: NCSY Alumni Event in NJ to Include Reunion of Famed Ruach Revival Band of 70’s, 80’s

From 1971 on, the RUACH REVIVAL band – Howie Kahn, Danny Wildman, Harold Fruchter and Joey Fishof – was a big name on the American Jewish music scene, and played at NCSY events across the United States and Canada year after year. They had big hit albums, and were the first American Jewish act to be invited to appear in Europe, after their success headlining a show in England.

Band members eventually moved on to other things, and last played together in 1984. But now they will reunite for the first time since then, when they will play Saturday night, February 17, at the NCSY Second Annual Alumni Reunion – the Adult Inspiration Retreat -- to be held at the Sheraton Parsippany in New Jersey. More details of the Reunion follow below.

NCSY Alumni to Reunite for a Second Time Feb 16-18; Retreat May Outdo the First

Why change a good thing? To make it even better. In response to the tremendous success of last year’s debut NCSY Alumni retreat, there will be a second and aptly renamed A.I.R or Adult Inspiration Retreat, taking place the weekend of February 16-18 in New Jersey, but drawing an audience from around the United States and Canada. The A.I.R is an NCSY-style Shabbaton for adults, in which NCSY Alumni, the OU Young Leadership Cabinet (YLC), and new friends will join for an uplifting and unforgettable Shabbat.

For NCSY Alumni, there are many new attractive elements to the retreat including:

NCSY Alumni To Rock The Bencher: Famous Songbook To Undergo Revision

There are few publications, particularly in the Jewish world, that can claim to have sold over a million-and-a-half copies as The NCSY Bencher has done. The Bencher, which has guided joyous singing at weddings, bar mitzvahs, and many Shabbatonim for nearly 25 years, is now being revised. The goal of the revision is to add new songs and new versions of old songs to the widely distributed compilation. NCSY Alumni, the organization of thousands of NCSY graduates, is sponsoring the revisions and welcoming the input of anyone who has internet access and an interest in a wide variety of Jewish melodies.
